This is actually a little crazy. If you could get arrested for spreading false transfer rumors, half of all football journalists would be in prison. Except that is exactly what has just happened in Turkey. Journalist Burhan Can Terzi has detained by police for reporting that Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala would join Galatasaray this summer (NTV via @iMiaSanMia).
The rumor initially came out of nowhere and was met with intense pushback, with Galatasary publishing official club statements denying
such a move. Just a classic case of transfer window madness, right? Well now it seems to have become slightly more serious for the person involved.
Terzi was taken into custody as part of an investigation by the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office regarding the dissemination of misleading information. No word on how this will play out, but this is certainly new in the realm of FC Bayern transfer reporting. Now if only someone could do the same to those Twitter “journalist” accounts that spread the rumors about Michael Olise joining Real Madrid, maybe we could get somewhere.
