Bayern Munich had an unusually difficult time trying to persuade Dayot Upamecano and his agent to accept the club’s conditions for a contract extension. This dragged on for months, possibly over a year, and it looked like a separation was on the cards. Thankfully, it was finally solved because of efforts made by sporting director Christoph Freund.
A report by Christian Falk from Sport Bild (as captured by X account @iMiaSanMia) stated that Freund played a crucial role in Upamecano’s contract extension.
The ‘conflict’ between the two parties was resolved because Freund picked up the phone and reached an agreement directly with Upamecano without his agent Moussa Sissoko.
It is widely believed that Upamecano’s wage demands (and the supposed release clause whose conditions we’ve yet to hear about) were the doing of his agent which made reaching an agreement incredibly tough. In the end, a deal was reached and the 27-year-old Frenchman extended his stay at Bayern until 2030.
