We missed this on Saturday, but here is the latest Duke Chronicle Player Preview, this time featuring freshman JoJo Boumtje Boumtje.
Boumtje Boumtje was out of the spotlight as an American teenager playing for FC Barcelona, but the basketball public caught on pretty quickly after he committed to Duke, followed by a tremendous run in the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup in July.
Already
seen as the possible #1 pick of the 2028 NBA Draft – he won’t be eligible until then – Boumtje Boumtje is a rare combination of size, skill, and talent.
From the Chronicle: “Despite his size, Boumtje Boumtje is far from a traditional center. The lefty is comfortable operating on the perimeter, shooting an impressive 53.1% from beyond the arc at the U17 World Cup; his long strides allow him to cover ground quickly, while his passing ability gives him another dimension as a potential frontcourt playmaker. Defensively, his length and mobility allow him to switch across multiple positions and disrupt passing lanes — as demonstrated by his 1.7 steals and 2.1 blocks per game at the U17 World Cup.”
Boumtje Boumtje is immensely promising, and he’ll likely be at Duke for two years. By the way, this is a pet peeve: people say Boumtje Boumtje has to stay at Duke for two years.
His only real restriction is that he can’t enter the NBA after his freshman year. We certainly hope he stays, but he would have other options if he were to choose to exercise them.
