According to a report by Tz, Bayern Munich are set for a shakeup behind the scenes. Chief scout Jörg Schmadtke could soon be sacked, to be replaced with the current head of recruitment at Manchester United.
Schmadtke only joined FC Bayern in 2024, on a recommendation from Max Eberl. The two already new each other from their time at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Upon arrival, Schmadtke allegedly revamped the club’s entire scouting department, revamping its personnel. He also implemented what is described
as “a costly and logistically complex live-scouting program” on-site.
However, in the time since his arrival, Bayern Munich have been unable to uncover any new surprise prospects, players who have gone on to become a huge success. Adding to this, the article also claims that Schmadtke is criticized for his behavior behind the scenes, but does not elaborate on the nature of this criticism.
While Max Eberl probably managed to save his job this summer, it seems his confidant could be shown the door. Current Manchester United director of recruitment Christopher Vivell is being considered as a replacement. Having previously worked for Chelsea, Hoffenheim, Leipzig, and Salzburg, the Red Bull connection is apparent, with FCB sporting director Christoph Freund noted to be a fan of the appointment.
For now, Vivell still has a contract with Man Utd until 2027. If Bayern Munich do go through with this sacking, it remains to be seen if they hire 39-year-old as a replacement.
