Hermann Gerland split from Bayern Munich in 2021, deciding to follow then-Bayern coach Hansi Flick to Germany. He had done a phenomenal job in Munich for decades, though, and continues to be thought of highly for numerous reasons. One of those is his eye for talent, one that saw him identify Erling Haaland as a top talentduring his Molde days. But, just like Haaland, sometimes talent just makes itself obvious on its’ own.
This was the case with Lennart Karl, who Gerland scouted and quickly determined
as someone Bayern needed to get: “I watched the boy play ten times, and on all ten occasions, he was the best player on the pitch,” Der Tiger stated simply (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “If I see a player just once, I have to wait and see. But if I watch a young player with that kind of talent ten times, then I know he’s going to become something special. It was the same good feeling I had quickly for Erling Haaland.”
A player with that kind of talent and the composure to play to full capabilities in front of a Bayern scout certainly deserves a chance to prove his worth at the Bayern academy. That Karl did, dominating both the U-17 and U-19 age groups before reaching the first team within two years of his official move to Munich. Sometimes, the scouting business can be simple.
