Newcastle United are facing increasing uncertainty about Sandro Tonali’s future in Tyneside, with the player not taking a public stance but truly attracting strong interest ahead of the summer transfer window, given his situation and never-ending whispers about what he and his camp really want.
The Italy international has remained one of the club’s most consistent performers despite a difficult campaign for the Magpies. Problem is, with European qualification unlikely and financial constraints surely
to hit Newcastle one way or another, something has to give.
Interest in Tonali has been building across Europe, with Manchester United among the clubs monitoring his situation and links to AC Milan and a move back to Italy’s Serie A already floated.
Newcastle are expected to listen to offers on all fronts and sanction sales for whoever it is, as long as the buyer agrees to the requested price set by the Geordies.
Fabrizio Romano, however, reported on Wednesday that Tonali’s preference would be to remain in the Premier League rather than return to Italy if he leaves Newcastle this summer.
According to Romano, the midfielder is not planning a move back to Serie A despite previous links to AC Milan. Instead, Tonali is keen to continue playing at the highest level in England, with developments around his future expected soon.
Tonali’s agent already made it clear in March that they had moved to Newcastle and considered the Magpies as just another middle step toward a bigger club in the EPL, so Romano’s report fit those comments.
With his preference now clearer and interest intensifying, we can only hope Newcastle squeezes the last penny from Man Utd.
