When someone mentions Darryl Strawberry, the University of Kentucky doesn’t usually come to mind right away.
Strawberry was a renowned Major League Baseball player, an 8-time All-Star with stints with the
Mets, Dodgers, Giants, and Yankees, who finished with over 300 career home runs and 3 World Series rings.
The 63-year-old Strawberry is a Los Angeles native who signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Oklahoma State for Gary Ward but ultimately bypassed college to be the first overall pick in the amateur draft, signing with the Mets in July 1980.
Strawberry recently was a guest on All The Smoke, the popular podcast hosted by former NBA players Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson. During his appearance on the podcast, Strawberry wore a black University of Kentucky polo.

Following his playing career, Strawberry has made multiple stops in the state of Kentucky for speaking engagements. This summer, he spoke at a fundraiser at The Carrick House in Lexington, the Education Builds Hope Luncheon.
Strawberry also was named a Kentucky Colonel and received a key to the City of Owensboro in 2017.
Interestingly enough, Strawberry reportedly made his minor league debut in Paintsville back in 1980.
The interview on All The Smoke is pretty interesting, especially if you’re not familiar with Strawberry and his story of battling substance abuse as well as recently recovering from a heart attack. He also talks about choosing baseball over basketball and some unique moments during his career.
Overall, pretty cool to see him repping the Cats on a show with over a million subscribers. You can check out the interview here.
