This has been a wacky week in the “sweet science.”
In addition to Oleksandr Usyk vacating all three of his heavyweight titles, Gervonta “Tank” Davis has been named “champion in recess” as a result of his ongoing legal drama. That means Floyd Schofield and Lucas Bahdi, currently ranked No. 1 and No. 2 at 135 pounds, respectively, have been cleared to fight for the vacant WBA title.
“The Championships Committee of the pioneering organization reviewed Davis’ legal situation and reached its decision after
determining that the ongoing proceedings could prevent him from fulfilling his championship obligations in the short and medium term,” the WBA wrote in a statement on Friday.
Davis, 31, gets first crack at the winner of Schofield vs. Bahdi, assuming he’s cleared to compete by then.
Elsewhere in the world of boxing, Floyd Mayweather has been banned from competing following a legal injunction after the aging pugilist allegedly ran off with a cash advance. And that doesn’t address all the other money Mayweather owes to various parties.
