Iowa Hawkeyes punter Boston Everitt may be playing the first six games of his American football career, but his ice-cold demeanor in front of seventy thousand plus fans suggests he was born for the pressure. Following in the legendary footsteps of former Iowa specialists Tory Taylor and Rhys Dakin, the Hope Island, Australia native has quickly transformed into the Big Ten’s premier field-position weapon. While the transition from Australian rules football to college punting routinely baffles outsiders,
Everitt’s elite development in the Coates Talent League combined with the athletic genes of his multi-time All-Australian AFL father perfectly prepared him to rule special teams in Iowa City.
The Rockstar Pedigree: Inside Boston Everitt’s AFL and Media Roots
Long before arriving in Iowa City, Boston Everitt was already intimately familiar with the spotlight. His father, Peter “Spida” Everitt, is a household name in Australia who played 16 legendary seasons in the Australian Football League (AFL). Standing a towering 6-foot-8, the senior Everitt revolutionized the “footy” landscape by blending massive size with the mobility of an elite forward, earning All-Australian honors three times while starring for St Kilda, Hawthorn, and the Sydney Swans. Beyond his 383 career goals, “Spida” became an iconic cult figure across Australia, known just as much for his fierce competitive streak as his rotating lineup of outlandish, bleached-blonde dreadlocks.
Today, Peter and his wife, Sheree, host the hit television show The Great Australian Doorstep. Boston spent a good portion of his childhood traveling across Australia and New Zealand as part of the production crew, growing up unfazed by cameras, microphones, and media scrutiny. Iowa coaches heavily credit this unique, media-saturated upbringing with cementing the ice-cold composure that allows a kid who had never played a down of American football to stay completely loose under the pressure of 70,000 screaming fans at Kinnick Stadium.
From Footy to Football: The Mechanics of the Elite Aussie Punt
The unique rules and pace of Australian rules football serve as the ultimate incubator for American college punting. In “footy,” throwing the ball is illegal. Instead, players must pass to open teammates by launching precision kicks while sprinting at full speed, completely unprotected by pads or helmets, while defenders attack from 360 degrees.
This forces players to master the drop punt from early childhood. By holding the football vertically and dropping it flat onto the laces, kickers generate a tight, end-over-end backward rotation. Unlike a traditional American spiral that rolls forward upon landing, this backward-spinning ball bites into the turf and dies. This makes it a premier weapon for freezing a returner and pinning an opposing offense inside their own 10-yard line.
Navigating a chaotic, fast-paced Aussie field naturally develops elite spatial awareness and directional control. This background allows Everitt to execute the modern rollout or rugby-style punt with ease. While traditional pocket punters panic when a protection scheme breaks down, the Hope Island native is hardwired to cleanly handle errant snaps, alter his launch point on the run, and casually flip the field under maximum pressure.
The Elite Pathway: Inside Boston Everitt’s Club and Academy Roots
Growing up, Boston’s development was forged within the highest tiers of Australia’s junior sporting ecosystem. He began his path as a marquee member of the St Kilda Football Club’s Next Generation Academy. These elite hubs are operated by professional AFL organizations to identify, scout, and nurture top-tier athletic talent within specific geographic zones. Crucially, St Kilda was the exact same club where his father, Peter “Spida” Everitt, originally launched his own legendary, All-Australian professional career.
From there, Everitt advanced to play competitive club football during the 2023 and 2024 seasons within the high-stakes Coates Talent League. As Australia’s premier under-19 development competition, the Talent League serves as the primary geographic highway to the pros, historically producing roughly three-quarters of all professional AFL draft selections. Far from a standard local youth club, the league operates as an elite, high-performance pathway. Players are subjected to professional-grade coaching, rigorous strength and conditioning regimens, and complex tactical education modeled directly after senior AFL organizations. For Everitt, his development instilled the elite work ethic and mechanical foundation necessary to jump straight into a premier NCAA Division I football program.
Pinning the Opponent: How Boston Everitt Rules the 20-Yard Line
Through the first half of the 2026 season, Boston Everitt has officially established himself as an elite tactical weapon for special teams coordinator Chris Polizzi. While Everitt is fully capable of booming the ball downfield, his primary strength has been suffocating opponent field position through surgical, directional placement.
Here is how his inaugural campaign shapes up by the numbers:
- Total Punts: 27
- Inside the 20: 17 (A spectacular 63.0% success rate)
- Season Average: 43.0 yards per kick
- Season Long: 58 yards
- 50+ Yard Punts: 5
By blending his father’s rockstar athletic composure with the tactical mechanics of Australian rules football, Everitt is ensuring that Iowa’s proud punting pipeline remains unbroken.
Off the field, the young specialist balances his football workload as a demanding pre-medicine major in Iowa City. Given how quickly he transitioned from an oval ball in Melbourne to dominating the gridiron under the Kinnick Stadium lights, it is safe to assume that the Hawkeyes’ newest star is an exceptionally fast learner.
