Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl initially wanted to take the transfer fee received from the sale of Kingsley Coman and re-invest it into another player.
However, that never came to be as
the club issued an internal mandate to refrain from any additional player acquisitions.
“Christoph (Freund), Vincent (Kompany), and I had an idea for a player we could sign if Coman left. However, it was then decided that we would no longer buy players, but only loan them. But that wasn’t a battle between the supervisory board and the sporting management. It was a completely objective decision, which we ultimately supported,” Eberl told 11Freunde (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Who was the player? Eberl did not reveal his plan, but we do know that he was very interested in former RB Leipzig Xavi Simons, who ultimately moved on to Tottenham Hotspur. Versatile and attacking-minded, Simons was considered to be a good fit in Kompany’s attack, but the Bayern Munich supervisory board was done with buying players before Eberl could put his plan in motion.
