There comes a turning point in many seasons where a moment of conflict can determine the fate of a team.
If the conflict is used as motivation, a team can often rally around itself and make a charge to glory. If the conflict becomes divisive, it can splinter a team for good.
Against SV Elversberg, Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany had seen enough of his team’s meandering performance and let the group know that its effort was unacceptable at halftime per Tz journalists Philipp Kessler and Mano
Bonke (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
In fact, Kompany went as far as to callout individual players for lackluster performances or even decisions they made on the pitch:
At the halftime of the game against Elversberg, Vincent Kompany, usually known with his level-headed approach, showed his players his tough side. The coach vented his frustration during the break, and even struck his tactics board. The reason for his anger in Elversberg was his team’s performance, despite the fact that they had gone 1-0 up at the break.
Among other things, Kompany was unhappy with Josip Stanišić and made that clear to him. Dayot Upamecano was also addressed. Even goalscorer Lennart Karl wasn’t spared Kompany’s criticism – the coach didn’t like Karl’s celebration, shushing the crowd in Elversberg. The player apologized after the game.
What annoyed Kompany was that his players lacked the basics and didn’t show commitment in the first half – so he let his anger show and made his point forcefully.
It should be noted that Bayern Munich was actually leading 1-0 heading into halftime against SV Elversberg, but the performance was not up to the standard that Kompany expected. After the break, Bayern Munich actually lost the lead on a sensational goal from former Bayern Munich prospect Maurice Krattenmacher.
Of course, Harry Kane would come to the rescue in the 72nd minute with a goal to help the Bavarians capture a 2-1 victory and spare the group from another tongue lashing by Kompany.
Given how the team played against Union Berlin in the following game, Kompany’s “motivational” tactics might have worked.
