In January, Liverpool made a significant move to shore up their defensive future when they signed standout 20-year-old French centre half Jérémy Jacquet from Rennes in a transfer deal worth up to £60M with add-ons. The price was high for the youngster, but such was Jacquet’s talent the Reds’ recruiters deemed him worth it.
They also deemed it worth agreeing a loan back to Rennes for the remainder of the season, judging it a fair price to pay to lock down the breakout young star and ensure nobody else
could turn his head and perhaps beat them to his signing over the next few months. That almost immediately backfired when the player picked up a season-ending injury.
The good news, if there ever is any good news to be found in a player being hit by a season-ending injury, is that Jacquet’s suffered a separated shoulder and following recovery from surgery the expectation will be for there to be less chance of long-term complications or issues than would be the case with a serious lower-body injury.
“Jérémy Jacquet is set to undergo surgery,” was the update from Rennes this week, a month on from Jacquet’s initial injury on February 7th against RC Lens. “On the pitch against Lens, Jérémy was forced to leave the game early due to a left shoulder injury. Following medical examinations, surgery has been scheduled in the coming days.”
The timeline for recovery from the surgery is two-and-a-half to three months, which while it will unfortunately and almost certainly rule the defender out for the remainder of the season, should comfortably see Jacquet fit and ready to go again by the time he formally joins Liverpool and pre-season kicks off in the summer.
