Newcastle United’s long-standing interest in Giorgio Scalvini seems to be back on track after receiving a late boost following Atalanta’s softened stance on selling the Italy international this summer.
The Magpies were heavily linked with the center-back a year ago but were unable to convince the Serie A club to part with one of its brightest young talents for a reasonable fee.
However, according to Tutto Atalanta, Newcastle remains “at the forefront” of the race for Scalvini and Atalanta is now prepared
to sanction a sale for around €45 million (£39 million), closer to his €38 million valuation on Transfermarkt.
“The Premier League’s interest in Scalvini has been a constant for seasons, with Newcastle at the forefront of the list of suitors,” the report says. “This courtship has never truly stopped, and so far it has been dashed by the club’s resolve: in the recent past, significant offers for the Bergamo-born centre-back have been rejected. But the current situation is different, and the threshold that could shake Bergamo’s interest is over €45 million.”
According to The Sun, and following the collapse of Ederson’s proposed move to Manchester United, Atalanta is seeking another significant sale to balance its finances, while new manager Maurizio Sarri’s preference for a back four has reportedly made Scalvini expendable.
The 22-year-old made 30 appearances in all competitions last season despite missing part of the campaign through injury, contributing three goals and one assist.
Whether Newcastle chooses to revive its pursuit remains unclear. The Magpies already have Malick Thiaw, Sven Botman, Fabian Schar and Dan Burn available at center-back, but it’s also true that Schar was on the outside looking in not long ago and already suffered a preseason injury, and both are entering the final stages of their careers with their contracts set to expire in 2027.
