Nebraska 3-New Mexico 0: 25-12, 25-13, 25-15
Well that was a quick match to start out the Huskers’ season at the Bob Devaney Center! Everyone was excited to be back in the Bob tonight to watch some Husker volleyball and they really kept it short and sweet for the fans tonight with a 3-0 sweep.
Former Husker Allie Sczech was on the call, for B1G+, tonight along with 2 others and they had said a couple times how New Mexico was getting into their rhythm after a win against their rival, New Mexico State,
earlier this week. The Huskers kind of just squashed whatever confidence they had coming in by shutting them down.
We saw the same lineup we’ve been seeing since the first match so we should assume this is the starting lineup that DBK is going with this year. Olivia Mauch got the libero jersey once again too. I wonder when, or if, we’ll see Laney Choboy as the libero at all this season.
This is meant to be no shade whatsoever towards New Mexico, but the Huskers kind of made them look like a high school team. The first set especially was a hard one for the Lobos. New Mexico just didn’t seem ready for what was to come.
Nebraska started the match off with a 10-0 run and basically just caught the Lobos with their pants down. We were heading into the 3rd set almost less than a hour after the match started.
New Mexico started to figure things out in the second set, playing the Huskers just a little closer than the first. Even though they weren’t able to keep up on the scoreboard, they were able to produce more offense than earlier in the match.
Campbell Flynn came into the match for Bergen Reilly and Skyler Pierce came in for Virginia Adriano in the 3rd set to get some playing time since the match was kind of in the bag already for the Huskers. Flynn had been looking a little shaky this season so this is good for her to get some game time touches.
The Lobos had their first, and only, lead of the match in the 3rd set when they took a 2-1 lead. The Huskers’ 7 blocks really helped keep the lead for the rest of the match.
Along with Flynn and Pierce, Gabby DiVita and Keri Leimbach entered the match late in the 3rd. Leimbach as a serving sub and DiVita for Sigler. DiVita got her only kill of the night on match point too.
Teraya Sigler and Manaia Ogbechie both ended the night with 9 kills. Harper Murray followed close behind with 8, then Adriano and Jackson had 7. Out of the girls that played 3 sets, Ogbechie was the most efficient tonight, hitting .538% and killing 9 of her 13 attempts.
Along with their offense, Ogbechie also had a very good defensive night with 5 blocks. Sigler was behind her with 3, and Andi Jackson had 2.
It was all around a good match for everyone and it was nice to see the bench get into the match yet again. Hopefully this will continue to happen as the weekend goes on. We will see though as Baylor and Georgia Tech are tougher opponents.
The Huskers are back in action tomorrow night against the #20 Baylor Bears. That match will begin at 7:00pm CST and will be televised on B1G Network.
