Prior to missing seven games because of a quad injury, McLaurin had cleared 1,000 receiving yards for five consecutive campaigns from 2020-24. He managed those numbers largely in substandard environments with a truly unique mĂŠlange of passers under center. Even during last yearâs slump, his 58.2 yards per game would have translated to a 989-yard season over a full, healthy campaign. 4 reasons for optimism as Commanders prepare for training camp
Peters said at Washingtonâs season-ending press conference that his goal over the offseason was to make the Commanders âyounger and fasterâ in 2026. Mission accomplished. This isnât to disparage those no longer on the roster, but Washington got much faster. The additions of edge rushers KâLavon Chaisson and Odafe Oweh, alongside linebackers Styles and Leo Chenal, should transform Washingtonâs defense from one of the slowest to one of the fastest.
Offensively, a healthy Daniels and McLaurin are back, and the Commanders added tight end Chig Okonkwo, who is dynamic after the catch. The additions of Williams and Brown should boost the speed at the wide receiver position. It was far too obvious at times, specifically on defense, that Washingtonâs opponents were significantly faster. That will no longer be the case.

Commanders training camp almanac: What to watch for all offensive 43 players
19 â Nick Nash, WR
Nash is one of the more intriguing roster long shots. The former college quarterback erupted for 16 touchdowns and nearly 1,400 receiving yards with San Diego State in his second season at the position, yet entered the NFL as a 26-year-old rookie after going undrafted. Nash has an opportunity to make a favorable impression for the practice squad or future consideration.
40 â Quentin Moore, TE
The 6-foot-4, 244-pound UDFA tight end with 4.63 speed caught only 13 passes over four seasons with the Washington Huskies. That injuries limited Moore to 12 games is the real note here. This feels like a practice squad stash candidate if thereâs enough potential demonstrated.
46 â Anthony Firkser, TE
Itâs been four years since Firkser had back-to-back seasons with 30-plus receptions. At 31, this FB/TE hybrid is around for camp depth, and his experience should injuries strike the position.
62 â Tanoa Togiai, G
The University of Utah product satisfies the athletic thresholds Washington seeks under general manager Adam Peters. Togiai moves well for a 6-foot-6, 321-pound guard. Seems like a worthy dart throw at a position at which maximizing depth never goes out of style.

Why Brandon Aiyuk is still a 49er as training camp opens, and what comes next
Reached by text message on Friday, Aiyuk replied, âAP and DQ (Dan Quinn) quietly put together a SQAUD! Iâm the final peice that will swing all the odds in our favor (trophy emoji) #GOCOMMANDERS #RAISEHAIL.â
Prior to Aiyukâs comments on social media, multiple sources with knowledge of the Commandersâ thinking said the team viewed him as a player who could potentially boost its roster if he became available and he was confirmed to be in full health.
Those sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they do not have permission to speak publicly on the matter, said at the time that the Commanders had no intention of trading for Aiyuk, and that if the 49ers released him, Washington likely would have only considered a short-term, highly incentivized contract. If Aiyuk agreed to such a deal and performed anything like the receiver he was a few years ago, heâd provide a significant boost to Washingtonâs offense. If he didnât, or if other issues arose, the Commanders would be able to move on without any significant loss.
But the more Aiyuk has posted on social media, the more he has seemed to jeopardize his hopes of returning to an active NFL roster â including Washingtonâs.
Aiyuk, who split with former agent Ryan Williams, remains on the 49ersâ reserve/left squad list. The designation allows the 49ers to retain his rights without him counting against the 90-player roster limit or the salary cap. To be moved off that list, Aiyuk must first submit a letter to the NFL player personnel department, addressing it to commissioner Roger Goodell and copying the 49ers, to request reinstatement to the teamâs active list.
Aiyuk has not made that request yet, and if he waits until after the Nov. 10 trade deadline, the 49ers can refuse the request. No player can be reinstated after his clubâs Week 13 game, which is Dec. 6 for the 49ers.

With the Brandon Aiyuk rumors essentially a thing of the past, wide receiver Antonio Williams possesses a pathway to immediate relevance. Day Three running back Kaytron Allen is an underrated gem to monitor at training camp.

Commanders get fresh Trevon Diggs take after Trey Amos news
The take comes from Locked On Commanders podcast host David Harrison. He believes the former Dallas Cowboys corner âis the biggest buy-low candidate, right? Heâs had the obvious connection with Dan Quinn from their time in Dallas, but thatâs not even close to the whole story (for) why it makes sense. Trevon Diggs (is) still very, very young. Heâs still only 27-years old.â
Harrison places Diggs on a list of four big-name veterans who can still answer obvious needs for the Commanders. A list that includes the playerâs brother, seven-time 1,000-yard receiver Stefon Diggs, who has more than one warning label for Washington.
By contrast, Harrison thinks Trevon âhas the best chance of providing value beyond a single season in his body and his play.â
Those chances are based on a couple of factors, including Amos and three other members of the Commandersâ defense landing on the PUP list to start camp.

Cam Newton: John Harbaughâs Speech Should Have Been About âThe Visionâ
At best, Harbaughâs speech was cringey and hokey, something reserved for high school or college football teams.
Newton explained why, at worst, the speech put the spotlight on himself while alienating the veterans in the room.
âThese are professionals,â Newton said on his â4th and 1â podcast this week. âWe want the vision. We want the mission. What are we going to be known for from our leader as a coach? What are we going to be known for? This ainât about those New York Giants, huh?â
Ultimately, if the Harbaugh era fails, the speech will be remembered as the first misstep in a series; a black cloud that predicted the inevitable demise.
But Giants fans will live with a cringey off-field speech rather than being an actual laughingstock on the field, which they have been since Tom Coughlin retired after the 2015 season.

Trent Williams tries to âsoak it inâ as he nears end of career
Williams turned 38 this month and he said that he expects the 2027 season to be his final one as an active player. On Sunday, Williams was asked if that mindset has led him to take on a different approach to this training camp.
âI wouldnât say it changed my urgency, but it does change my mind frame a little bit,â Williams said, via 49ersWebzone.com. âLike, instead of just coming to work, I actually try to soak it in. I just donât know. Obviously, you know, it could be my last two years. Itâs probably the plan.â

Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti has said he will sell his team rather than pass ownership to his family members. Bisciotti, 66, said at a news conference in January that heâd like to win a couple more Super Bowl titles with the Ravens and then get out of ownership, ideally around age 75.
Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, who is 86, told Bloomberg in January that heâd been offered close to $15 billion to sell the team but declined, with plans to keep the franchise in his family. Ross has sold minority stakes in the Dolphins and related assets.
There was speculation this year that Vikings owners Zygi and Mark Wilf might be interested in selling the franchise, based on the teamâs reduced spending on its player payroll. But the Wilfs plan to keep the team in their family, according to people familiar with the league-wide ownership dynamics.
Similarly, those people do not believe that the Raidersâ Mark Davis or the Chargersâ Dean Spanos have any plans to sell controlling interests in their teams. Davis reportedly gave Raiders part-owner Egon Durban, a private-equity executive, the right of first refusal if Davis opts to sell his controlling interest in the team. Tom Gores, the owner of the NBAâs Pistons, purchased a 27% stake in the Chargers in 2024, resolving a long-running ownership dispute among siblings in the Spanos family.
Fans signed an online petition in January 2024 seeking to remove David Tepper as the owner of the Panthers, around the time that the NFL fined him $300,000 for âunacceptable conductâ after he was shown on video throwing what appeared to be a drink in the direction of Jaguars fans from his suite during a game in Jacksonville. But Tepper, a highly successful hedge fund manager who is the president and founder of Appaloosa Management, has given no indication that he intends to sell the team that he purchased in 2018 for $2.275 billion.
âWe donât have a sense of whoâs next because thereâs no driving force to sell,â Ganis said. âThe league is doing well and is on a very significant upward trajectory. It has only scratched the surface of whatâs going to be available globally, internationally and by using AI to personalize things. So the NFL has very significant additional runway, at least a decadeâs worth.â
