TCU Women’s Soccer advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament thanks to a dominant 7-0 win over Grambling State in Fort Worth this past Friday. The Frogs out shot Grambling 22-5 and were by far
the better team in all aspects of the game. Four different Frogs found the back of the net while Seven Castain led the way with a hat trick and Emma Yolinski picked up two goals in the win.
TCU’s first shot on goal of the game found the back of the net as Castain gave the Frogs a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. Castain took advantage of a turnover by the Tigers and buried a great shot from long range. The Frogs doubled the lead just a few minutes later on their second shot on goal of the game as Yolinski scored her first goal of the game off an assist by Castain. Castain made a great lead pass to Yolinski who outran the Tiger defense and beat the goal keeper on a breakaway. The Frogs kept up the offensive pressure with a shot on goal by Grace Vest that was saved in the 27th minute and corner kicks in the 26th and 27th minutes. TCU’s defense had an excellent first half, not allowing a single shot on goal through the first 45 minutes of the game. The Tiger defense settled in after the shot by Vest as that was the last shot of the first half for the Frogs. TCU did a great job of controlling play in the second half and converted on two high danger chances to head into the break with a 2-0 lead.
The TCU offense started fast in the second half with a shot from Kamdyn Fuller in the 46th minute before Yolinski scored her second goal of the game in the 53rd minute. Sydney Becerra made a great pass to a cutting Yolinski who was stopped on her first shot attempt but stayed with the ball and converted on the rebound to extend the lead to 3-0 in favor of the Frogs.
Fuller tallied a shot on goal in the 56th minute before Castain scored her second goal of the game on assists from AJ Hennessey and Becerra in the 61st minute. Some nice short area passing set Castain up for a one on one chance against the goal keeper which she converted.
Just seven minutes later, Castain scored her third goal of the game off assists by Cameron Patton and Marli Galdamez to give TCU a 5-0 lead. Patton made a nice move to create space, crossed the ball into the box, and Castain converted on the header.
TCU had two more good chances in the 75th minute when a shot from Vest hit off the cross bar and a shot on goal by Hannah Harms was saved by Grambling State. The lead was extended to 6-0 in the 78th minute thanks to a goal by Patton and an assist by Vest. Vest made a great pass into the box and Patton followed up her initial shot that was saved to give TCU a touchdown lead.
Grace Vest converted the extra point when the Frogs were given a penalty kick in the 85th minute thanks to a Grambling State foul in the box.
The number two seeded Frogs will face off against the number seven seed in Memphis for the second round of the NCAA Tournament this Thursday, November 20th in Fort Worth at 7:00 pm.
