After a rocky couple of weeks in the portal, the Buffs have flipped the script and are now one of the most active programs in the country. Cornerback was the biggest need after two year starters Preston Hodge and DJ McKinney moved on, Hodge to the draft, McKinney to Notre Dame, and promising youngster John Slaughter entered the portal. For a moment the cupboard at corner looked bare.
Since then, Colorado has been busy, and the next name on the list is Emory Floyd, a senior transfer from Appalachian
State who previously spent a season at South Carolina. Floyd brings production and traits, 57 tackles, five pass breakups, and one interception last year, plus legit track speed. At 6’1”, he was an elite sprinter during his time with the Gamecocks, he is exactly what Colorado needs on the boundary.
Floyd’s commitment also underscores Coach Prime’s portal approach this offseason. The staff is stacking competitive, scheme fit players, many of them three star prospects, rather than chasing only big name five star headlines. Those stars matter at the top, see Jordan Seaton and JuJu Lewis, but recent national title runs around the sport keep proving you can win with tough, developed three star players who fit your system and raise the floor.
Corner was a crisis point two weeks ago. Now it looks like a true competition heading into spring, with more additions still possible. Floyd’s speed gives the room a different gear, and his experience should help stabilize a secondary that needed snaps and confidence. There is more portal business ahead for the Buffs, so stay tuned, and as always, Sko Buffs.
