Newcastle United continues to assess younger defensive options ahead of future transfer windows, with Ross Wilson’s recruitment operation placing increasing emphasis on players who already have Premier League experience and come with high development potential.
According to CaughtOffside’s Saikat Chatterjee, one of the players on Newcastle’s shortlist is Brentford right-back Michael Kayode, who the Magpies are tracking alongside Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. Juventus and other Serie A clubs
are also following the 22-year-old Italy international.
“Sources have informed CaughtOffside that Liverpool have placed Kayode at the ‘top of their watchlist’ as they look to strengthen right-back rotation,” Chatterjee reported. “Arsenal, Tottenham and Newcastle United are also monitoring him to add athleticism to their defensive lines.”
Kayode has continued to rise after he played the full 90 minutes and scored in Italy’s 4-1 Nations League victory over Turkey during the international break. The defender joined Brentford from Fiorentina for €17.5 million in 2025 and has since established himself as an important first-team player.
There is no indication Newcastle has made an offer, however, with Chatterjee reporting that “no official bid has been submitted to Brentford, and no direct negotiations have begun.” According to Chatterjee, the situation remains at the “monitoring and reporting” stage.
Brentford is also in a strong negotiating position after handing Kayode a six-year contract through June 2032 in July. Although his market value is estimated at around €40 million, the report claimed Brentford would demand at least €60-65 million (£52-56 million) before considering serious discussions.
A January transfer appears obviously difficult, with Brentford viewing Kayode as a key starter and having no intention of selling midway through the season, but things could change next summer.
Would Kayode be worth a €60-65 million investment for Newcastle, or should the club target a less expensive right-back? Share your thoughts in the comments.
