Harry Kane enters the World Cup on the back of phenomenal form at Bayern Munich. The England captain amassed an absurd 61 goals and 7 assists in 51 games for the Bavarians as the team clinched the double for the first time since 2020 and reached the semifinals of the Champions League. Furthermore, he scored in five consecutive UCL knockout matches. This form has raised attention from football fans around the globe and sees his touted as one of the early favorites for the Ballon d’Or, the prize granted
to whoever is voted the best player in the world.
When asked about it, Kane made no attempts at false modesty and proclaimed he believes he is “definitely among the favorites” in the race for the prize. Bayern president Herbert Hainer saw this proclamation and decided to go a step further than the former Tottenham Hotspur player: “I liked how Harry Kane spoke confidently about the Ballon d’Or. Based on his performances and his entire personality, he absolutely deserves it.”
BFW Analysis
Whether Kane will actually receive the award will likely be down to his and England’s performances in the World Cup. Recency bias and performances at big tournaments are big factors in the Ballon d’Or voting, so what he does in the World Cup will likely matter more than anything he did with Bayern. Weighing his performances in an eight game tournament over a 51-game season may seem somewhat disproportionate, but that is how the Ballon d’Or is given out.
