The Philadelphia Eagles officially announced three roster moves on Tuesday afternoon. Here’s an overview:
- OG Landon Dickerson was placed on injured reserve.
- WR Britain Covey was signed from the practice squad to the active roster.
- TE Josiah Deguara was signed to the practice squad.
Let’s sort through this news on a player-by-player basis.
LANDON DICKERSON
Dickerson to IR was previously reported on Monday evening. The Eagles’ three-time Pro Bowl left guard admitted that he “was a complete liability” during the team’s Week 1 win over the Washington Commanders.
Dickerson also added that he got hurt in training camp and he’s hopeful that the time off will help him get fully healthy. By going on IR,
he’s automatically ineligible to play in the Eagles’ next four games. The soonest he can return to the active roster is Week 6.
One must wonder if this rest will truly allow Dickerson to get back to form. It seems entirely possible that he’s just physically diminished at this point in his career. That’s a very sad and unfortunate thought … but there’s much to suggest that might be the case:
- Dickerson has an extensive injury history dating back to his college football days.
- Dickerson struggled in 2025.
- Speaking shortly after the conclusion of last season, Dickerson did not sound very optimistic about making a full recovery.
- Dickerson reportedly gave thought to retiring in the offseason. He’s since denied as much … but he reportedly agreed to a revised dealwhere he took a pay cut and had a year lopped off his contract. Why would he do that if he felt great about his outlook?
- Dickerson struggled in training camp this summer and looked to be lumbering around at times.
- Speaking on SportsRadio 94WIP on Tuesday, Nick Sirianni said the Eagles will be missing Dickerson “for the foreseeable future.”
- Dickerson himself talked about the benefit of going on IR in order to “have a good stretch at the back end of the season.”
Even putting his health aside, which is impossible to do, there’s question about Dickerson’s fit in the Eagles’ new blocking scheme.
To be clear, I hope my skepticism is wrong. It would be such a massive deal if he’s able to return to form.
I tend to think that the Eagles didn’t want to outright bench Dickerson, who has earned legendary status for sacrificing his body in order for the team to win Super Bowl LIX. I think he might be done and they’re hoping that the replacement plan will work out well so they don’t have to put him back on the field.
It remains to be seen how the Eagles will actually replace him. The expectation is that Drew Kendall will take over at left guard … but we’ll see if that’s the case.
BRITAIN COVEY
The Eagles temporarily elevated Covey from the practice squad in Week 1 to be their punt returner against the Commanders. To no surprise, he was effective in that capacity. Now he’s back on the roster.
This development means that the Eagles are currently carrying seven wide receivers on the roster: DeVonta Smith, Dontayvion Wicks, Makai Lemon, Darius Cooper, Hollywood Brown, Elijah Moore, and Covey.
Smith, Wicks, and Lemon comprise the top three. Cooper saw limited playing time on offense as a fourth receiver in addition to being a major factor on special teams coverage. Brown was active in Week 1 but played zero snaps while Moore was a healthy scratch.
JOSIAH DEGUARA
The 29-year-old Deguara was originally a third-round pick (No. 94 overall) by the Green Bay Packers in the 2020 NFL Draft. He notably overlapped with current Eagles tight ends coach and run game coordinator Ryan Mahaffey on the Packers from 2021-2023.
Making 12 starts in 77 regular season games, Deguara has logged 66 career targets for 53 receptions, 471 receiving yards, and three touchdowns. His most recent NFL stop prior to this was a three-day stint on the New York Giants’ roster back in late August.
With the Eagles recently placing Eli Stowers on injured reserve, the team only had three tight ends on the roster (Dallas Goedert, Johnny Mundt, E.J. Jenkins) and none on the practice squad. Now they have a fourth tight end for practice purposes, at the very least.
STILL ONE OPEN ROSTER SPOT
Dickerson and Stowers going to IR opened up two roster spots. Signing Covey filled one of those openings. The Birds still have one vacancy remaining.
