It started with Nike and the NBA, then it made its way to the MLB, and now the trend is commencing at the college football ranks — City Edition uniforms. These alternate uniforms don’t traditionally utilize team colors but rather incorporate elements of the city the team plays in.
The Tulane Green Wave unveiled their City Edition uniforms Tuesday, and they will make their debut next home game on Nov. 15 vs. Florida Atlantic.
There’s a lot going on in this unconventional uniform design, so let’s break it down. The helmet design is supposed to reflect the New Orleans’ sidewalk pavement, complete with cracks and Mardi Gras beads. The blocked ‘TULANE’ font on the helmet is a custom font originating in the 1880s, used on tiles to depict the city’s street names. The center stripe of the helmet contains the wrought iron pattern which is a staple of New Orleans architecture. Completing the helmet is a green face mask and ‘Uptown’ emblazoned on the helmet bumper — a nod to the section of New Orleans where Tulane resides. One last nod to the Big Easy is hidden on the back of the helmet where there is a ‘Warning’ sticker — which is the logo of the Sewerage and Water Board.
The jersey is a similar hue of blue to the color of the tile font, and each shoulder on the jersey also contains the wrought iron stripe pattern. As depicted in the video above, the player names are written in the tile font on the back. The ‘TULANE’ on the front of the jersey and the number are both white and outlined in gold. Finally, the uniform features white pants with the wrought iron stripe running down the side of each leg.

It’s a 25-day timeframe from the day of the uniform unveiling until the date the look debuts. Tulane is on a bye this upcoming week and then plays road games at UTSA and Memphis. The City Edition uniform debuts Nov. 15 at Yulman Stadium, where Tulane will look to win its fifth consecutive home game.
