Illinois won’t be dancing this spring.
Illinois Baseball’s season came to a disappointing end in the Big Ten Tournament when the Illini lost 3-1 to the Purdue Boilermakers on Wednesday in Omaha.
The game featured an absolute pitching duel with both starters determined to keep their teams’ seasons alive in the elimination game.
It was not until the sixth inning that the Illini were able to put a run on the board, courtesy of Big Ten All-Freshman AJ Putty’s RBI single to give the team a 1-0 lead.
Unfortunately, this was the only offensive bright spot on a day in which the group was colder than a January Champaign day. Illinois amassed a measly six hits.
Illinois’ Aidan Flinn was dominant for most of his seven innings of work, striking out seven and only allowing two hits.
However, his defining moment came in the bottom of the eighth inning, in which he hit two batters and walked another to load the bases with only one out.
Following the walk, Reed Gannon stepped onto the mound but was unable to get the Illini out of the jam, resulting in three Boilermaker runs.
The Illini would then go down in order in the top of the ninth to seal a Purdue victory.
After losing their first game of the tournament to Iowa, the Illini went 0-2 in Omaha, blowing leads in consecutive days.
Illinois will have its hands full with an important offseason ahead. Retaining their strong freshman and finding replacements for key pieces out of eligibility will have to be a top priority for head coach Dan Hartleb and his staff.
