It’s Sunday once more, and you know what that means — it’s time for our weekly social media roundup! This week, the calendar flipped to October, and with it came all the things that define autumn here: spooky season, pumpkin spice, and, of course, THE PLAYOFFS. This week, a second battle with the Boston Red Sox greeted the Yankees for a second year in a row, and well, things went about as well as can be hoped. With that in store, we’ve got a lot to cover this week, so let’s get started!
Sunday: Reflections on the Season
While the
Yankees may have gotten to continue their season past last Sunday’s rainout, not everybody gets to participate in October. With all games being nationally televised the rest of the way, the YES Network team officially draws their season to a close — and while we still see them around as reporters and with the pre- and post-game shows, it’s not quite the same.
Even with more to play, though, some players nonetheless took the time to share some photos from the end of the season.
Monday: Wild Card Hype
As always, the Yankees dropped a few hype videos on the off day before the series began, with one of them narrated by the Knicks’ own Josh Hart.
Meanwhile, the rest of New York wished the Yankees luck in the postseason.
Tuesday: Game 1
As the Yankees took the field for Game 1, Suzyn Waldman, as always, dropped a picture from the booth, while other members of the Yankee family reminisced about their time in pinstripes.
The YES Network’s James Smyth, meanwhile, took in the action from the seats, and was once again surprised by how much louder the Stadium gets during the playoffs than it does during the regular season.
Cam Schlittler’s performance generated quite a bit of excitement even outside the locker room.
Even so, it wasn’t Schlittler who got the Game Belt, but the other Massachusetts native, Ben Rice, who also put together a historic outing.
Oh, and one last thing from Game 1: the bullpen catcher went viral, as he channeled his inner Cam Skattebo on the Ben Rice grand slam and took the ball off the face mask.
Wednesday: Game 2
You know what’s better than scoring nine runs in order to beat the Red Sox in the playoffs? That’s right: doing it a second time! The action began with a ceremonial first pitch for the ages, as former Yankees World Series champion Clay Bellinger threw out the first pitch to his son, Cody…and then watched his son deliver a three-run homer to ice the game later in the evening — earning him the Game Belt.
Of course, Bellinger was not the only star of the night.
Unsurprisingly, CC Sabathia tweeted throughout the entire game — drawing on a little inspiration from a certain Knicks championship run.
I’m not 100% certain what moment Zack Britton was referring to here — possibly the Spencer Jones reach-on-strikeout — but it’s clear he was locked in.
And, of course, Josh Hart made his thoughts known.
Thursday and Beyond: On to the ALDS
Naturally, the players (and their families!) took to social media to celebrate afterwards, giving us a bit of a behind-the-scenes look at everything.
Even the minor league teams got in on the fun.
And, naturally, we got Dave Sims’ thoughts on the game.
Tyler Wade retires
Former Baby Bomber Tyler Wade announced his retirement this week. We look forward to seeing him back at Yankee Stadium for Old Timers’ Day in a few years — and for Aaron Judge’s induction into Monument Park, as he remains one of the Captain’s oldest friends in the sport.
Damn Yankees
Had last Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles been played, the team would have announced — and honored — the cast of the upcoming Broadway revival of Damn Yankees.
