After a horrendous run in the UFC that ended on an eight fight losing streak, Tony Ferguson is now 3-0 under the Misfits Boxing banner.
It shouldn’t be surprising that Ferguson, once considered one of the best lightweights in MMA, is mopping up the comparatively light competition in Misfits. He earned his second TKO win due to unanswered strikes in the organization, defeating Mahmoud Sebie by trapping him in the corner and firing off an endless stream of punches (highlights here).
Ferguson discussed
the win backstage with Fred Talks Fighting and how the loss of his mother in August affected him deeply.
“Man, I was nervous as s–t,” Ferguson said. “This whole week was just different compared to any of these fights I’ve had, from UFC to MMA to boxing to whatever it is. My mom has always been there, physically, and this time it was a little bit different. But I didn’t feel any void because I felt the energy.”
“When the one that birthed you is no longer in your life, the one that gives you advice and all these things, you gotta remember exactly what the good stuff was,” he continued. “And I’m not saying I was in a dream state. We’re talking about from this morning getting up and then doing everything, stretching, [I] did everything right, kept calm.”
Despite nearly knocking Sebie out in the first round, Ferguson was not happy with how he performed early in the fight.
“I gotta work on getting that first round in the back so that way when I’m out there, I’m not so much in a dream state,” he said. “But, I know exactly what I gotta do … I knew that we were gonna weather the storm. He was gonna come out and blow his wad. Exactly what he did, we came out and we capitalized on that.”
The second was nearly disastrous for Tony as Sebie landed a shot that wobbled the former interim UFC lightweight champion.
“I didn’t think he was gonna come out that strong in the second,” Ferguson said. “My coach said he’s like, ‘He’s gonna come out hard. This is the round he’s gonna come out.’ So he got me pretty good, but it woke me the f–k up, and so I had to be sharp after that.”
“So like I said, getting that first round in the back is gonna be the difference between going out there and that second round, making sure that’s in the first round.”
Austin McBroom, who just KO’d FaZe Temper under the Brand Risk banner, stepped into the ring to face off with “El Cucuy” after his win, and we expect that’s the fight Misfits will make next.
“I don’t even know who the guy was that was in the ring with me,” Ferguson said. “Austin McBroom? What’s his record? I’ll fight anybody. Mams and I will go and we’ll talk. We’ll make something happen, and I wanna get another victory out this year. So maybe in December, we’ll find that out.”
