The transfer portal hasn’t moved as fast as many Syracuse fans have wanted. So far Gerry McNamara has added two of his former Siena players in Gavin Doty and Tasman Goodrick, but who else are the Orange after?
According to reports I’ve seen, Syracuse has been in touch with two players in the portal, so let’s take a look at them.
Jerald Colonel started 34 games for Stephen F. Austin last season and was named the Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year. The 6’9” forward averaged 5 points, 7.3
rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game-shooting 50% from the field and 56% from the foul line
Colonel played one season for the Lumberjacks after transferring from Northwestern State. Prior to that he played two years of community college.
The second player mentioned is more familiar to the new Syracuse staff. Point guard Jalen Cox of Colgate led the Raiders last season scoring 17.9 points per game with 5.2 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game as well. The 6’3” native of Los Angeles had 22 points in Colgate’s win at Siena last season and obviously left a strong impression on Gerry McNamara.
These two players would certainly fit areas of need at point guard and interior defense so we’ll see if the Orange are able to sign them, or if they pivot to other players as McNamara continues to build his 26-27 roster.
