Carolina baseball completed a road sweep of Cal on Sunday, boosting the Tar Heels to 17-3-1 this season and 4-2 in ACC play.
It was a great bounce-back series for UNC after losing two of three to Virginia at home March 6-7. The 15th-ranked Tar Heels outscored the Golden Bears 24-5 over their three games in Berkeley, winning 8-1, 6-2, and 10-2.
Junior outfielder Owen Hull was a standout at the plate this series, going 6-for-12 with 5 RBI and drawing two walks. Four Tar Heels hit home runs: junior Jake
Schaffner, junior Macon Winslow, grad student Colin Hynek, and junior Erik Paulsen. Schaffner homered in Game 1, while the others went deep in Game 3.
Pitching was strong all weekend for the Tar Heels, with the best performance coming from sophomore Ryan Lynch. Lynch got the start in Game 2 and went a career-high 8.0 innings, allowing two runs on six hits while matching his career high with seven strikeouts and issuing just one walk. Sophomore Walker McDuffie pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief across Games 2 and 3, allowing two hits and striking out four. He was credited with the win in Sunday’s finale.
