In advance of yesterday’s game, the Texas Rangers placed Josh Smith on the paternity list and placed Chris Martin and Cole Winn on the injured list. To replace them they recalled pitchers Jose Corniell and Luis Curvelo and purchased the contract of infielder Donovan Solano. To make room for Solano on the 40 man roster, Nathan Eovaldi was transferred from the 15 day injured list to the 60 day injured list.
In addition, today, the Texas Rangers claimed pitcher Dom Hamel on waivers from the Baltimore
Orioles. To make room for him on the 40 man roster, the Rangers transferred Marcus Semien from the 10 day injured list to the 60 day injured list.
The main thing to talk about in regards to Friday’s moves is the addition of Corniell. He was the team’s Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2023, putting up a 2.92 ERA in 101. IP between low-A and high-A, and then missed all of 2024 due to Tommy John surgery. Corniell returned to action in July and has excelled, putting up a 1.89 ERA in 38 innings over 13 starts between the ACL, AA and AAA, with 41 Ks against 9 walks. He is expected to make his major league debut this weekend.
Hamel is a 26 year old righthander who was drafted by the New York Mets in the third round in 2021 out of Dallas Baptist. He was used as a starter until this year, when the Mets shifted him primarily to a relief role. He put up a 5.32 ERA in 67.2 innings at AAA for the Mets, striking out 75 and walking 22 while allowing 12 homers. He has a solid low-90s fastball to go with a slider, but has been homer prone. He was claimed by the Orioles from the Mets earlier this month, and now has been claimed by the Rangers.
