“The Future” remains bright.
No. 2-ranked Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Welterweight Ian Garry came up short against 170-pound kingpin Islam Makhachev, losing via unanimous decision in UFC 330’s main event last night (Sat., Aug. 15, 2026) inside Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (watch highlights).
Following his defeat, Garry hopped onto Instagram to react to the loss.
“What’s up, everyone? Tonight wasn’t my night,” Garry said. “I feel great. I did great. Islam was just better
than me tonight, and that’s okay. I want everyone who loves me, supports me and wants me to do better to know that I’ll be back. I’m not disheartened by this. I’m bulletproof in my mind. I’ll be back. I’m 28 years of age.
“I just fought the great—possibly the greatest fighter we’ve ever seen in this sport—and I pushed him to the f—king wire,” Garry continued. “I’m so proud of myself, and I’m so proud of my team and everything that we’ve done. I’m so proud of what I’ve done in the world and what I’ve become.”
“No one is stopping me,” he added. “Tonight was not my night. Islam, congrats. You did amazing. I have nothing but love and respect. I’ll be back and better than ever.”
Garry (17-2) suffered the second loss of his professional career and had his two-fight winning streak snapped. During that run, the Irish contender scored victories over former Welterweight champion Belal Muhammad and potential next title challenger Carlos Prates.
The 28-year-old should remain inside the Top 5 and will undoubtedly receive another highly ranked opponent in his next outing. Possible options include the winner of Sean Brady vs. Gabriel Bonfim, which takes place on Nov. 7, or another former champion such as Jack Della Maddalena.
Nevertheless, love him or hate him, Garry proved that he belongs among the Welterweight elite and should remain near the top of the division for the foreseeable future.
He did not leave Philadelphia with UFC gold, but “The Future” remains plenty bright.
