On Monday’s Raw, IYO SKY became the latest pro wrestler to have a dive to the outside go wrong. SKY, considered by some to be the best in the world (including the guy who goes by “The Best in The World”), crashed directly onto the top of her head after appearing to not quite clear the ropes when launching herself face-first at Asuka.
Radio and internet personality Peter Rosenberg, who counts announcing for WWE NXT feeder brand Evolve among his many hosting and opining gigs, reposted another version
of the same clip with his take on it. The Hot 97 and ESPN Radio voice added that he offers that take to every WWE wrestler he can:
Other than having much more access, Rosenberg’s pro wrestling background is much like mine — and probably most of yours, too: he’s a longtime fan. For most of my adult life, which includes most of the time I’ve been fortunate enough to be a fan with an internet megaphone, I’ve made it my policy to not tell professionals in fields I’m not trained in how to do their jobs. Because people tend not to appreciate it; I know I don’t, so it’s a Golden Rule-type deal. Also, you usually get the kind of responses Rosenberg’s getting today.
Some we can probably assume are playful, as they seem to be from friends of his. They still aren’t saying, “great advice, Pete!”
We don’t know what kind of relationship Rosenberg has with Ring of Honor legend and AEW coach/producer Chris Hero. But we’re pretty sure the man who was known as Kassius Ohno in WWE won’t be using the advice in his training sessions.
To his credit, Rosenberg took it well…
Later adding:
People seem upset I posted this. It came only from a place of sincere care. Iyo is amazing and one of the best on earth and it still presents a huge risk. I just think the risks outweigh the reward. I say this as a huge fan and someone who is privileged enough to be up close and personal with this business. I am not a wrestler and never put my body on the line. My respect for those who do it is undying. That said — I have opinions for a living . And my opinion is this move is not dope enough to be worth it anymore.
And as someone else whose job description includes having opinions in public, I’ll vouch for that as a professional response.
