After a record spending summer, Liverpool headed into the 2025-26 season as title favourites but the reality hasn’t lived up to expectations. Now, as the January transfer window draws close, there’s a growing
focus on what this Liverpool side might still need.
For most, the priority should the Reds dip back into the market is centre half, where a season-ended injury to Giovanni Leoni along with Joe Gomez continuing to struggle for fitness has them looking short on depth. Beyond that, there’s always chatter about attacking reinforcements.
If you believe the rumour mongers out of Spain, though, it’s midfield where the Reds have now come close to making a move, with Fichajes claiming a €70M (£61M) bid has been lodged for Real Madrid 23-year-old French international Eduardo Camavinga.
For their part, Madrid are said to have rejected it out of hand as they’re said to see Camavinga as an important part of their midfield moving forward—though at the moment he’s very much not first choice there, with just 650 minutes of playing time so far this season for Los Blancos.
Those minutes come from 16 appearances, working out to 40 minutes per on average and speaking to a player more an important rotation option for Madrid than he is outright important. Camavinga is a top talent, though, and could eventually grow into a starter.
From a Liverpool point of view, it’s hard not to raise your eyebrows at the mooted fee for a player who, at least in the short term, wouldn’t arrive at the club as a nailed-on starter and given there do seem to be other areas that need strengthening in the short term more than midfield.
As such, it seems plausible that Fichajes are overstating Liverpool’s interest and that any talk of transfers and fees has likely been more exploratory in nature than it has been firm bids. Assuming, that is, that there’s any truth whatsoever to their rumour mongering.
