Competing on their home dirt at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course, the Missouri men’s and women’s cross country teams surged to dual top-four team postseason performances Friday morning at the 2026 SEC Championships.
In front of a vocal home crowd along the Gans Creek stretch, the Mizzou women secured an impressive fourth-place team finish in a stacked 16-team field, while the Mizzou men took fourth place overall in their 14-team championship 8,000-meter race.
“They’ve really come together in the last
few weeks and I think for all of us, it’s exciting, but it’s a little bit of a deep breathe as well to know that, what we believe about ourselves, we can go back that up with performance,” head distance coach Kyle Levermore said.
Alabama captured the women’s team title with 48 points, while the Crimson Tide men also swept the team crown with 37 points.
Wanjiku lead women’s fourth-place finish
In the morning’s opening 6K race, sophomore Monica Wanjiku paced the Tigers with an elite front-running effort, crossing the finish line with a new personal best of 19:05.2 to claim seventh place overall and lead Mizzou’s scoring attack. Her result secured All-SEC First Team honors for the second year in a row and was nearly a full minute faster than her time of 20:02.2 from last year’s conference meet.
“I always tell myself, even if the pain comes, you have to go through it,” Wanjiku said. “Some people feel pain, but they feel like, oh I want to give up. But the moment you feel that pain, that’s when the race is starting. So, you have to keep on pushing.”
Following Wanjiku, Kobi Walker turned in a strong performance to finish 17th overall with her new personal best of 19:27.2. Walker’s result earned her a memorable All-SEC Third Team honors.
Alongside her, senior Rahel Broemmel took 29th at 19:54.7, and Suzy Lecoutre finished in 33rd at 20:06.5. Charlotte Cullen rounded out Mizzou’s top five scorers in 55th place with a time of 20:35.4.
The Tigers posted a team score of 138 points to lock down fourth place, finishing ahead of regional powerhouses such as Arkansas, Kentucky, and Oklahoma.
Men’s pack attack drives fourth-place outcome
On the men’s side, the Tigers executed their signature pack-running strategy over the 8K, placing all five of their runners within the top 45 overall to tally 145 team points for fourth place. Mizzou managed to finish just behind national powers Alabama (37), Arkansas (76), and Florida (82).
Freshman star Jean Kipchumba spearheaded the Tiger effort with an impressive eighth-place finish, crossing the tape in his new personal best of 22:32.2. Alongside this, Kipchumba claimed his first ever All-SEC Second Team and All-SEC Freshman Team. His result was the first time in program history somebody was able to claim both honors during the same season.
“I think what’s impressive is [Kipchumba’s] adjustment,” Levermore said. “And I think very similar to Monica when she came in, there’s certain people that adjust pretty quickly, and he’s adjusted well.”
Mizzou’s tight scoring pack proved crucial to holding off conference rivals Tennessee (148) and Ole Miss (187).
Elijah Limo crossed second for the Tigers in 26th at 23:13.2, just shy of his personal best time of 23:13.0. Alongside him, Raymond Kipkoech came in 29th with his new personal best of 23:18.5, and freshman Emmanuel Kiprop took 39th at 23:40.1.
Joshua Allison claimed 44th at 23:48.1, and Tyler Freiner finished right behind him in 45th at 23:48.3. Carter Spradling capped off the Tigers’ crucial front-running pack in 48th place at 24:01.2.
