If the Rockies offense can be anywhere near as hot as the weather, then their series against the Washington Nationals should be an exciting high-scoring affair.
With temperatures hitting 100 in Denver on Monday, the Rockies will play host to Washington starting tonight and will need their offense to be on. The Nationals (50-50) lead MLB in runs scored (545) and are tied for first with the Yankees in homers (144). The Rockies (40-61) rank No. 7 in runs (484) and No. 17 in home runs (116).

LHP Kyle Freeland (2-8, 7.36) is coming off a decent start against the Giants when he gave up four runs on six hits with no walks and nine strikeouts in six innings on July 11. He didn’t get much run support as Colorado lost 4-2 in San Francisco.
LHP Andrew Alvarez (2-3, 4.04) will be on the mound for Washington, a team that has played remarkably well on the road this season with a 30-19 record. Alvarez, who has 13 appearances this season, six of which are starts, last pitched on July 12 when he gave up three runs in two innings out of the bullpen. He has gone 0-2 with a 4.05 ERA in 26.2 innings as a starter this season. This will be Alvarez’s first career appearance against the Rockies.
Earlier on Monday, the Rockies front office was busy, dealing away RHP reliever Seth Halverson to the Los Angeles Dodgers for a pair of minor league players: right-handed pitcher Nick Frasso and outfielder Landyn Vidourek. Read more about the trade here.
