After Saturday’s overtime win, Fran Brown kept his team on the field after the Alma Mater and he had them run. Christian captured the video and the media picked up on the story.
Of course Fran was making a point- to his team, to his recruits, and to the rest of the country. After a flurry of news stories over the weekend (ESPN , the talking heads
got to the story yesterday and two of the biggest egos in sports media made sure to tell us they didn’t approve.
First we had the fine folks at Barstool Sports who needed Tippy-Toes Portnoy and Coach Hooters to tell us they felt Fran’s actions were performative.
We suppose Portnoy was salty because his bankrolled phenom looked pretty poor at Oklahoma, and then the Patriots got embarrassed at home by Geno Smith. As for Gruden, well he is an expert in being embarrassing, but I’m sure being the Spider 2Y 2nd banana to a doofus in a Big 12 sweatshirt is just as rewarding as leading a NFL team to a Super Bowl.
Not to be outdone, salty UConn alum Darius Butler cried on the Pat McAfee Show about Fran’s decision. While Butler and McAfee said they like Fran and his overall message, they questioned the methods of forcing the players to run in front of the fans. Of course, we’d question the idea of losing to Ohio but that’s Pat and Rich Rod’s problem to worry about, not ours.
Thankfully not everyone in college football wants to stand on their pulpit and preach. Richard Johnson of Split Zone Duo knows there’s a method to Fran’s madness and that Fran knows his ABC’s- Always Be ‘Cruitin’
Fran also got a shout-out from JuJu Gotti on the Dan Lebatard Show who appreciated the old-school coaching.
In today’s college football world, there is value in getting everyone talking. You need to know how to play the media game and Fran Brown knows how to move his pawns around the board….and you don’t even need to stand on your tip-toes to see what he’s doing.
