Former Terp Francis Tiafoe advanced from the U.S. Open quarterfinals in a five-set thriller against Alex Michelsen. Tiafoe, a College Park native, fought back from being two sets down and won his last three sets 7-5, 6-3 and 7-6(6).
Tiafoe had lost the first two sets 7-5 and 6-3, and was on the brink of defeat and going home. This comeback win from Tiafoe increases his record to 3-17 when trailing down from two sets. Michelsen seemed to be controlling the momentum of the match throughout the first two sets, recording 10 aces and 33 points total won.
With the three nail-biting sets submitted by Tiafoe, his win percentage on the second serve was recorded at 52%, along with 71% points won (29/41) and 47% net points won (8/17).
Tiafoe’s father helped spur his son’s tennis career through the Junior Tennis Champions Center. He practiced in the facility throughout his childhood, along with his twin brother, Franklin Tiafoe, rooting their athletic careers in the College Park area.
