Ladies and gentlemen, there’s a new sheriff in town. Only, he’ll have to earn his badge the hard way.
Days after freshman Matt Zollers re-signed with Missouri – boy, I’m still not used to saying that – Ole Miss backup QB Austin Simmons has signed with the Tigers according to reports from multiple reporters across the college football landscape.
Simmons, who won Ole Miss’ starting job out of summer camp this season, suffered an injury that saw him lose his role to D-2 transfer Trinidad Chambliss. Simmons has
been praised by his coaches for his attitude and leadership through a difficult period, and it makes sense why the former blue-chip recruit would want to find a more comfortable landing spot.
Despite his pedigree, Simmons won’t be the automatic starter at Mizzou. He’ll be in competition with Zollers, who has a few starts to his name and familiarity with Eli Drinkwitz’s offense. The presumption is that Zollers and Simmons will duke it out for the QB1 role over the next few months, with outside competition from another veteran QB, also likely coming in from the portal.
Simmons has two years of eligibility remaining and has already graduated from Ole Miss, meaning he’ll spend two years focusing on mainly football (and probably some studying because we’re still keeping this veneer steady.)
