Florida State men’s basketball (7-9, 0-3) tries to put its humiliating defeat against NC State behind it as it takes on Syracuse (11-5, 2-1) on Tuesday away from home. The Seminoles are still winless in conference
play after three defeats to North Carolina, Duke and NC State.
It has been a trying start to the season for first-year head coach Luke Loucks, and Saturday may have been the low point on a campaign that includes a loss to UMass. FSU set all kinds of records in its defeat to the Wolfpack, but not the kind of history you want. NC State set a new ACC record for win margin on the road as the Noles gave up the most points allowed at home in program history.
Still looking for the first ACC win of his career, Loucks will try to get it against an inconsistent but improved Syracuse team on Tuesday night.

Florida State Seminoles vs. Syracuse Orange: Notes to know
- After two seasons of missing the NCAA tournament, third-year Syracuse coach Red Autry is on the hot seat in his third year since taking over for SU legend Jim Boeheim. So far, the Orange have been up and down with a record of 9-2 at home, but 2-3 away from the dome, and one of those home losses was against Hofstra. At their best, Syracuse can play with anyone, as evidenced by an early-season win over Tennessee, but because of its volatility, it projects as a bubble team throughout the season.
- Tonight will be the first matchup in this series history without Leonard Hamilton or Jim Boeheim roaming the sidelines. A season ago, the Orange ended Hamilton’s career, eliminating Florida State at the ACC tournament, 66-62.
Syracuse Orange: Players to know
- G J.J Starling: Starling is back at Syracuse for his senior season after an injury-riddled campaign in 2024-25 and appears to be picking up where he left off. The guard is the only player on the Orange averaging over 11 points (11.1) while shooting 43% from the floor and 35% from three. In the ACC tournament, Starling dropped 27 points, and the Noles will be looking for revenge on Tuesday.
- G Naithan George: After spending two seasons at Georgia Tech, George stayed in the ACC and has started every game for SU so far this season. George is the Orange’s facilitator on offense with 5.1 assists per game, although he averages 10.4 points a night.
