I kinda like that Vanderbilt is good at football.
I don’t really like it when Mizzou has to play them. But the story is otherwise very cool. From the overlooked quarterback who now headlines nearly every
college football story, to the revival of Jerry Kill, to the fact that Vanderbilt is bowl eligible after 7 games when they’ve made 10 bowls in their history! Like that’s legitimately cool.
The Commodores have never won 10 games, and have won 9 games four times, and two of those were before World War I. The other two were the reason Penn State gave James Franklin their job. Fun fact, Mizzou was 1-1 against Franklin, beating him the second time around 51-28 in 2013.
Nothing is a given in this league by any stretch, and Vanderbilt’s remaining schedule isn’t a walk in the park. It’s also not that bad. They have Missouri at home this weekend, then they’re at Texas. That environment will be tough but Texas hasn’t really looked like the team everyone thought they would be. Then they get Auburn and Kentucky back to back, two teams who have yet to win an SEC game, and then they finish with Tennessee on the road. That’s a navigable slate of games. I think I’m rooting for Vanderbilt to reach 10 wins for the first time in school history, but also hoping they take a loss at home to the Missouri Tigers.
What’s funny is for the first time in forever, a loss to Vanderbilt is not a bad season indicator. Since joining the SEC Mizzou is 10-3 against the ‘Dores and those losses all accompanied a bad season. 2012 was the entry to the league when James Franklin got hurt and Mizzou never found their footing. 2015 was Pinkel’s swan song year as things fell apart over the last 7 games, 6 of them losses. Then in 2019, probably the game which sank the Barry Odom tenure in Columbia. Mizzou’s average win total for the years with a Vandy loss is 5.3. The average win total in seasons they beat Vandy is 8.0.
But things are different and Vandy is good. A loss likely sinks any playoff hopes, but it’s no longer a bad season indicator. So good on the ‘Dores for getting that straightened out.
Best Mizzou just go down there and win anyway.
