After the disappointment of 2025-26, if Liverpool were to turn it around in 2026-27 it was likely always going to come with at least a few storylines or redemption and rediscovery. Nobody, though, would have imagined those stories would include a defender signed on loan from Barcelona.
That defender is, of course, Ronald Araujo.
The 27-year-old Uruguayan international became an unexpected loan signing when it was made clear to him he didn’t have a future under Hansi Flick with the Catalan giants, and
on the back of a few difficult years he jumped at the opportunity for a change of scenery and took a pay cut to join the Reds.
His loan deal included a €55M (£47M) purchase option, and if you were a betting man at the moment you’d say it’s a near certainty the club will trigger it and bring Araujo into the fold long-term such has been his impact, which captain Virgil van Dijk was asked about on Sunday.
“I think he was very aggressive in the right moments,” Van Dijk said following Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Brighton when asked about the sudden Anfield cult hero. “That’s what we need. You see it with the crowd, the crowd loves it, and that energy can feed the team.
“As a team we welcomed him with open arms, we can see his defensive qualities, his presence, and his positive attitude. He doesn’t speak much English but he’s working on it. It is down to him to just keep going now, but it’s great to have him in the team and I think the fans appreciate it as well.”
There’s no doubt the fans do appreciate it—or that when Anfield gets fired up feeding off Araujo’s energy it does then help to energize the rest of the team.
Which isn’t to say Araujo has been perfect. He hasn’t been far off it, though. And between setting a very high standard mostly at right back but occasionally also at centre half along with never, ever seeming to give less than 100% when he’s on the pitch, it’s easy to see exactly why the crowd already loves him so much.
“I think his quality is clear to see,” Van Dijk added. “I think he slots in very well for our back four, he’s a great character, and we’re happy to have him.”
