Manchester United stars Ella Toone and Maya Le Tissier both featured in the starting XI for England in a Tuesday friendly against Australia, and both players featured in their preferred positions.
Le Tissier, who Sarina Wiegman said repeatedly is also a right back in her view, played alongside Esme Morgan in the center of the Lionesses’ back four against the Matildas, and helped her side to a clean sheet in the process. Lucy Bronze filled in at her regular role at right back, and Taylor Hinds played on the opposite
side of the formation.
Le Tissier played the full 90 for the second game in a row. She featured at right back in a 2-1 loss to Brazil three days ago, but looked at her best in a central role.
Toone played at the heart of the formation in her usual No. 10 role behind friend and former club teammate Alessia Russo, and pitched in with an assist on the second goal, scored by Bronze.
Toone has spent some time playing around the formation under Wiegman as well, but has taken over the No. 10 role in recent years. She featured prominently in England’s UEFA Euro championship last summer, marking another memorable run after scoring off the bench in the final four years ago.
The pair of Reds were set to be joined by teammate Jess Park after her impressive start to life at United, but she pulled out of the squad to recover from a concussion suffered in a 4-1 win over Everton earlier this month.
United are back in action in the Barclays Women’s Super League on Sunday against Brighton & Hove Albion.
