The build-up…
In midweek we made it through to the quarter-final of the League Cup, where we’ll face Crystal Palace in December for the chance to make the semi-final of a major competition.
We also remain unbeaten in the Europa League and sit 9th in the table with the same points total as Juventus and four ahead of AC Milan.
Just imagine how we’d be feeling right now if we’d started our Premier League campaign in a similar way as we have the cups.
As it stands though, we’re bottom of the Premier League table on five points. Above us – second from bottom and a point better off – are today’s opponents, our old friends, Coventry City. We’ve had some huge games in the last couple of years, but this one is arguably as big as any.
That would be true by just looking at the table, but looking at the fixture list confirms things. Our next five in the Premier League see us entertaining Chelsea and Spurs, while travelling to Villa, Liverpool and that lot up the road. The game isn’t played on paper, but it’s difficult to argue that’s not a tough run of games to follow today’s fixture.
The starting XI in midweek showed where the priorities are as Le Bris made eleven changes, and as a bonus to the result, there were one or two performances that could have given the manager food for thought. It’s one to keep an eye on, but the main focus will be on the inclusion (or not) of Brian Brobbey and Wilson Isidor.
“Should” and “hopefully” were doing some heavy lifting during the press conference when the manager was questioned about their fitness ahead of the weekend, but seeing their name on the team sheet would give everyone a huge boost ahead of kick-off.
It hasn’t really been long enough since we played Coventry. I’d have been quite happy to have signed off this rivalry with Dan Ballard’s header and left it there. But almost eighteen months after that moment, we lock horns once again.
Another significant moment came at Coventry when, not only did Eliezer Mayenda put our noses in front in the first leg to take back home, but it gave us a victory at their place for the first time since 1985. Our record against them since then has been woeful – just 5 wins in 28 meetings home and away – but none of us would swap that for beating them in the play-offs.
To be fair to Frank Lampard and Coventry, they did something similar to what we did under Peter Reid in recovering from a heartbreaking defeat in the play-offs to take the title the following year. They collected 95 points and did it with a swagger, but things haven’t quite gone to plan yet in the top flight.
They spent something in the region of £150m on around twenty players to prepare for the jump up, but in their previous league game, there were eight players who played a part in their promotion who took to the field in the Premier League. Having said that, they are a point better off and have one more win on the board this season so far.
Like us, they have played the current top three in the table in the first eight games, but also went down to defeats against Hull and Fulham on home soil, which is something I’d quite like to see us replicate this afternoon.
The betting…
The bookies have the Lads at 19/10 to win the game, while Coventry are 13/10 for the victory, and the draw is 9/4.

Prediction…
Coventry City 1-1 Sunderland
Both sides are desperate for a win, which is why I don’t think either will get one. Losing is almost unthinkable for either side looking at the table and the nerves could end up being the biggest factor that dictates the afternoon.
