Week two is complete for this season, and we have five more finalists for women’s basketball player of the year.
These nominees put together career-high scoring performances, set a conference record for steals
and helped lead a win over an ACC foe.
This week’s nominees, whom you can vote on at the bottom of this article, are the following:
Dani Bayes, Boise State
Baye scored a career-high 31 points in the Broncos’ 91-77 win over UC Davis. The Australian shot 11-for-13 from the floor, including 7-of-9 from 3-point land. She rounded out her statline with five steals, four rebounds and two assists.
Maggie Doogan, Richmond
Doogan, who was tabbed as the best mid-major player ahead of the season, averaged 20.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and six assists per game in two big non-conference wins for the Spiders. She shot 52% from the field and 93% from the line. The Broomall, Penn., native just missed a triple-double with 25 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists in an 84-58 win over defending CAA champion William & Mary. She followed it up with 16 points, nine rebounds and three blocks in a road win at Columbia.
Fanta Kone, Sam Houston
Kone set a program and CUSA single-game record with 12 steals in a 78-44 road win at Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Those dozen steals are the second most of any player in the country so far this season, behind Notre Dame’s Hannah Hidalgo’s 16. The senior scored a career-high 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting and dished out seven assists.
Brooklyn Meyer, South Dakota State
Meyer led the Jackrabbits to a pair of wins by averaging 24.5 points, nine rebounds, 4.5 assists and three blocks per game. The senior forward had 24 points, seven rebounds, five blocks and four assists in a 91-60 home win over Murray State. She then posted 25 points and 11 boards in a 95-71 win over Montana. The Larchwood, Iowa, native leads the Summit League in scoring (26 ppg) and blocks (3.8) and ranks second in assists (3.8) and third in rebounds (9.3).
Priscilla Williams, Jacksonville
Williams she averaged 20 points on the week. She scored a career-high 29 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in the Dolphins’ 69-64 road win over Georgia Tech. She preceded that performance with an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double in a loss to Florida. The guard ranks fifth in the ASUN in scoring (16.5 ppg) and leads the league in rebounding (10.3).
