Barcelona sporting director Deco has offered an update on Frenkie de Jong’s new contract, with the midfielder still yet to put pen to paper on new terms.
De Jong is into the last year of his current deal
and expected to sign on until 2028 shortly, although president Joan Laporta has admitted the Dutch star had asked for time to resolve some personal issues first.
Deco now says negotiations are taking place and is optimistic a deal will be agreed soon.
“We’re talking. Frenkie is really enjoying being here. Maturity at all levels, with the family, within the team… if you’re a player with character, you don’t just want to stay to be at Barcelona, but because you want to compete for titles, and he sees that he can compete for titles,” he told Mundo Deportivo.
“He sees this and wants to stay here. At the club, we see him as a key player for the current project and the years to come, so I think we’ll make the most of it.”
Both Barcelona and De Jong seem eager to get the new extension agreed, and both sides will certainly want it done and dusted before the end of the year.
