The mystery is over: Hall of Fame-bound coach Steve Kerr is returning to the Golden State Warriors for a 13th season … and a 14th one. After taking a few weeks to mull things over — and after a few meetings with Joe Lacob and Mike Dunleavy Jr. — Kerr agreed to re-sign with the Warriors on a two-year deal, as first reported by the ESPN trio of Shams Charania, Ramona Shelburne, and Anthony Slater.
While reports of the deal have not been revealed, ESPN reports that Kerr will retain his title as the highest-paid
coach in the NBA. Last year, Kerr made $17.5 million, while the next-highest salary was $15 million, given both to the LA Clippers’ Ty Lue and the Miami Heat’s Erik Spoelstra.
Kerr was reported to have discussed making some shifts in his coaching philosophies while meeting with Dunleavy and Lacob. So it wouldn’t be surprising if the team looks a little different on the court this season, or if the staff has an altered arrangement.
By making the decision to return to the sidelines fairly early in the offseason, Kerr gives the Warriors plenty of time to pivot to remaking their roster ahead of free agency, the NBA Draft, and the trade season. The Dubs are determined to land another star to pair with Steph Curry as the Warriors chase a fifth ring in this era.
With Kerr signed for two years, you can fully expect the Warriors to reach an agreement with Curry — who has one year left on his contract — on an extension.
