We are within a month of the Kansas City Chiefs opening training camp at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri.
It’s an annual tradition to have a “camp crush” heading into the first chance to watch the Chiefs in full-team practices, when there are 90 players — instead of 53 after cutdown day in September — to watch and overanalyze.
Former Chiefs tight end Jody Fortson was one of the most successful camp crushes in franchise history. Before he scored four times over the 2021 and
2022 seasons, he was a big-bodied wide receiver from Division II Valdosta State who went undrafted in the 2019 class.
On Tuesday, Fortson shared some practice highlights from his time as the ultimate “camp crush,” the tall, strong possession receiver that Chiefs Kingdom craves after years of valuing speed among the wide receivers in head coach Andy Reid’s system.
Former Chiefs wideout Justyn Ross was next, and this year, undrafted receiver from the University of Cincinnati, Jeff Caldwell, could be following in line.
It remains to be seen if that role can be carved out as well as it was by Fortson, who successfully transitioned from wide receiver to tight end in order to realize his potential as a one-off playmaker and a red-zone threat, an underrated role on the Chiefs’ offense that was the best in the league and won Super Bowl LVII in 2022.
