Carson Steele’s impressive showing against the New England Patriots opens up the possibility that he could be a surprise inclusion on the 53-man roster, especially if Sean Mannion does have plans to eventually implement a fullback into his newly installed scheme. (It’s not
something we’ve seen yet, but that doesn’t mean it won’t eventually become part of the plan.) My thinking with Steele is there’s probably not room on the roster for both him and a fourth tight end. More on that in a moment …

THE CRAZY HURDLING MADMAN CARSON STEELE: How do you not love this kid? To put Carson Steele’s 6-catch, 88-yard receiving performance Saturday night into some perspective, the most yards he ever had in a college game was 57 in Ball State’s 20-16 loss to Eastern Michigan in Muncie, Ind., in 2022. The most he’s had in an NFL regular-season game is nine, in the Chiefs’ 2024 win over the Panthers in Charlotte, N.C. Steele’s 88 yards were the most by an Eagles running back in a preseason game since Raheem Mostert had 93 against the Jets (along with 69 rushing yards) in a loss to the Jets in East Rutherford in 2015. Steele, who finished at UCLA after two years at Ball State, really shined Saturday night. He showed soft hands, a great feel for running in space and tremendous toughness in traffic as well as plus athleticism hurdling defenders twice, including on his touchdown. You never want to get carried away with strong preseason perrformances against backups, but there’s a lot to like about Steele’s game. Steele spent his first couple years with the Chiefs and played in all 17 games in 2024, rushing 56 times for 183 yards with seven catches for 26 yards. There isn’t a roster spot for him here, but assuming the Eagles can get him through waivers he’s precisely the kind of player you want on the practice squad. Smart, tough and productive.

Kubena (3): Saquon Barkley, Tank Bigsby, Will Shipley. Carson Steele just made it very hard for the Eagles to stash him on their practice squad. The hurdling Steele played like all the other 31 teams were watching — and, indeed, their pro scouting departments were. Steele, an undrafted rookie in 2024, will be subject to waivers if the Eagles cut him. I can’t see him making the roster in this crowded position group, and he has not been practicing as an H-back in training camp, suggesting the Eagles wouldn’t file him under the “tight end/fullback” category. This happens in training camp. Steele’s preseason appearances are essentially job interviews with other teams. He’ll have another one in the preseason finale on Friday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Berman (3): Saquon Barkley, Tank Bigsby, Will Shipley. This is a quality trio. Barkley is one of the best running backs in the NFL; Bigsby is one of the better No. 2 running backs. If Shipley is third on the depth chart, that’s a good depth chart. The Eagles could stash a veteran such as Dameon Pierce on the practice squad for injury insurance.

Seeing Joshua Weru log an NFL sack in the second-ever football game of his entire life was really, really cool. Also heartwarming to see how his teammates were so happy for him. Weru has probably shown too much potential for the Eagles to expose him to waivers, which is crazy to think about.

More concerns for Eli Stowers: Stowers played only a part-time role for the Eagles in this game. Philadelphia selected Stowers in the second round with the expectation that he could become the team’s lead tight end in 2027, with Dallas Goedert entering the final season of his contract. There was at least some hope that Stowers could contribute as a rookie. He is primarily a receiving tight end, and it has become clear that Johnny Mundt will likely serve as the second tight end in 12 personnel this season. Last week, Stowers was the second tight end in 12 personnel behind Grant Calcaterra, suggesting Stowers was fourth on the depth chart. This week, Philadelphia rested its top two tight ends, while Calcaterra was sidelined by an injury. Rather than giving Stowers an every-down role, the Eagles used him exclusively in 11 personnel during the first quarter. Philadelphia used 12 personnel on half of its plays during that stretch, with E.J. Jenkins and Cameron Latu handling the tight end snaps in those formations. Stowers should still make the roster given his draft capital, but his preseason usage has been discouraging, and his dynasty value should continue to fall.
Getting Some Answers – Iggles Blitz
There is still a lot of work to be done, but so far Bell looks like he’s worthy of getting a chance at RT next year. The pro game doesn’t look too fast for him. And we know he’s got the size/strength to handle defenders at any level. Bell is a beast. Tyler Steen is having the best camp of his career. He was a bit of an unknown last season. He’s playing well right now and could turn into an above average starter. This is a contract year for him so the timing is ideal from his perspective. The final OL note is that new coach Chris Kuper seems to be doing a good job. We’ve seen progress from fringe guys, rookies, young players and veterans. Everyone seems to be buying into the new system. Following in the footsteps of Jeff Stoutland isn’t easy. Kuper is off to a good start.

“I call him a bowling ball of knives, ’cause he’s so short, he’s so small, he’s so stubby, but he is so quick and powerful and precise with his hands that for a taller guy like me, it gives me a lot of trouble,” Jordan Davis said. “It gives me a lot of fits. That’s one of the things that keeps me up at night with Willie. “He has a certain tenacity about him when he goes and plays a game.” That tenacity, according to Lampkin, is rooted in his wrestling background. Lampkin began wrestling as a freshman at Mulberry High School in Mulberry, Fla., a city in central Florida with a population of roughly 4,000. Within three years, he finished as the heavyweight runner-up in the state tournament, and within four, he won the title. He ultimately chose to pursue football over wrestling in college, playing three seasons at Coastal Carolina and two at UNC before moving on to the NFL as an undrafted free agent. But as he vies for a depth spot on the Eagles’ initial 53-man roster as an undersized, undrafted interior offensive lineman, Lampkin continues to channel the mentality and the skill set he cultivated through wrestling. “I feel like wrestling just helped me to be more gritty and just try to get after everybody,” Lampkin said.

Tight ends (4) — Dallas Goedert, Eli Stowers, Johnny Mundt, Grant Calcaterra. Stowers, the team’s 2026 second-round pick, still needs some seasoning — particularly as a blocker. With Mundt as the only true blocking tight end on the roster, this feels like a position Roseman could look to tweak for a team that wants to be run-heavy. [BLG Note: I don’t think Calcaterra should be on the roster … but I do think he has a better chance of making it than fans would prefer.]

On Saturday, Cleveland HC Todd Monken had no update on Wright. On Sunday, multiple reports came out that Wright would miss the season due to an Achilles injury and were signing DE Derek Barnett to the roster. […] Barnett was a first round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017. In nine seasons, Barnett has 34 sacks, 57 tackles for loss, 104 QB hits, five forced fumbles, and five fumble recoveries, including three returned for touchdowns. Last year, for the Houston Texans, Barnett played in all 17 games, adding five sacks, 10 QB hits, and eight tackles for loss to his career totals. Barnett’s contract details have also already been released, but we are awaiting what his base, guaranteed pay is.

One that seemingly benefits the players and a select set of college programs, but continues to erode some of the things we have known about amateur and professional sports for about the last century or so. Right, wrong, or indifferent, the Browns are a footnote in Wright’s history-making move. What happens when Wright finally finishes his college career? Does he go back into the NFL draft? Is he a free agent? By waiving him, Cleveland no longer has his contractual rights, but do they get first dibs from Wright’s agent for releasing him to pursue this option? Steelers host former Eagles cornerback to visit – Behind The Steel Curtain
The Pittsburgh Steelers hosted former Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Eli Ricks to a visit on Sunday, per the NFL transaction wire. Pittsburgh also hosted cornerbacks Dee Williams and Jaylon Guilbeau. Ricks signed with the Eagles as an undrafted free agent out of Alabama in 2023. He made the team as a rookie, appearing in 16 games, largely on special teams. He appeared in seven games in 2024 and spent 2025 on the practice squad. He had five interceptions over three seasons at LSU and Alabama.

The Dallas Cowboys were the winning team on Saturday night after their preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals, but there was one clear and undeniable winner specifically: Shiyazh Pete. In case you were unaware, Pete is a rookie, undrafted offensive lineman on the Cowboys roster. Most notably he is the first Navajo to sign an NFL contract. Pete has an Arizona background, but he ultimately went on to play college football at New Mexico State before transferring to Kentucky, and received an incredible ovation both during and after Saturday night’s game.

Washington’s interior offensive line. The run blocking by the group was pretty non-existent, and there were WAY too many missed blocks and mistakes, mainly by the backups. I didn’t think rookie Matt Gulbin played well at right guard, and I though Julian Good-Jones struggled at center. Foster Sarell and Nicholas Petit-Frere weren’t good either, but the interior play was a lot worse.
NY Giants rookies impress against the Miami Dolphins – Big Blue View
LB Arvell Reese. Reese was on the field for all of 11 plays against the Dolphins. It’s a small sample size, but also a continuation of the play we saw from Reese against the Vikings. The first play of the game saw him win his gap against a power run concept, blow up the fullback, then continue to assist on Chauncey Golston’s tackle. The second snap had him defend the running back, taking an accurate first step on (what looked like) an outsize zone run, only to quickly recognize the play-action boot, disengage, and defend the rollout. We really didn’t need to see all that much from Reese to back up what he did last week. He’s explosive, agile, processes quickly, and hits like a truck.
