Today Bismack Biyombo turns thirty-four. Over the past season-and-a-half, the Congolese center has been with the Silver & Black. He originally signed a 10-day contract on February 9, 2025 to help fill the big man void after an injury to Charles Bassey and a trade involving Zach Collins left the Spurs thin at the center position. Later that month when Victor Wembanyama was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis, Biyombo signed for the remainder of the season. Last summer he signed a one-year/$3,364,153
and stayed on with the Spurs as their elevated to the their first postseason appearance since the pandemic.
Biyombo was drafted in 2011 by the Sacramento Kings as the seventh overall pick before being traded to the Charlotte Bobcats later in the night. He played for six different team in just over thirteen seasons before sitting out much of the 2024-2025 season. The Spurs call brought his veteran presence to a young team. He also willingly played out the remainder of the season that saw both Wemby and the newly acquired De’Aaron Fox out with injuries. His attitude and professionalism supported the team at a time when they could have thrown in the towel and dragged their feet into the summer. Biyombo’s presence gave the team a burst of energy that help illuminate Stephon Castle, leading him to earn the Rookie of the Year honors.
Biyombo spent most of this past season on the bench, but he remained ready in case his number was called. At this point in his career, he may be looking toward off court options. Perhaps the Spurs will maintain his employment similarly to how they transitioned Gorgui Dieng from a player in 2023 to basketball operations representative, his current role with the franchise.
No matter the future holds for Bismack Biyombo, he is sure to put his best foot forward and lead with the same professionalism that made him a beloved member of the San Antonio Spurs.
