We asked fans to share whether they wanted to see Ty Simpson or Stetson Bennett as the official backup quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams going into Week 1, and perhaps to no one’s surprise, the majority of fans wish to see the first-round pick Simpson over Bennett as the gameday backup.
At the time of this writing, the Rams have not formally announced an official quarterback two. Sean McVay can say it’s a 2A/2B situation with both Simpson and Bennett having the support of the coaches and team,
but the Rams will need to make a decision for gameday.
Which quarterback will be the official backup to Matthew Stafford and which will serve as the third emergency quarterback?
Fans seemingly want to see Simpson because he has the higher floor as a first-round pick, he is clearly L.A.’s plan to potentially replace Stafford, so give Simpson the chance to fill-in now if Stafford misses time.
McVay may see it differently with Bennett having more experience with the Rams and the head coach may think that Bennett has earned the right to compete in place of Stafford if he were to go down.
A question that will likely not be answered this week, is that if Stafford were to miss a whole game, who would McVay want to game plan around, Simpson or Bennett?
This is perhaps the more interesting backup quarterback competition the Rams have had in years and it’s a situation that is still developing.
