Jonas Urbig has been a Bayern Munich player since January 2025, working under head coach Vincent Kompany and looking to take the necessary steps forward to one day become the next fixture between the sticks at the Bavarian giants.
Still, earning the #1 shirt at Bayern is no easy task and requires a goalkeeper to be extraordinarily good at a number of tasks. Speaking to Bayern’s club magazine Säbener 51, Urbig lists exactly what Kompany expects from his goalkeepers to facilitate the Bavarians’ dominant
style of play:
“First and foremost, of course, [I need] to save shots. But it’s not just about that,” Urbig states (as captured by @iMiaSanMia) before launching into a long list of requirements. “It’s also about influencing the game in possession, finding solutions when building up play, playing high up the pitch, covering against counterattacks, coming off your line to deal with balls played in behind the defensive line, and helping organise the rest defence.”
None of that is especially surprising or especially different from what is required from the best goalkeepers in the world, but it is an impressive list when laid out like that. Hopefully Urbig is up to fulfilling all those demands.
