The USMNT got some unwelcomed news over the weekend as right back Sergiño Dest was substituted early in Phillips Sport Vereniging Einhoven’s 2-1 win over AZ Alkmaar on Saturday. The team released a statement noting that he has a leg injury but his return timeline is not currently known.
Dest commented that, “I will do everything within my power to be back there top fit towards the end of the season and am confident that I will succeed,” Dest said. “Thank you for the many heartwarming messages. This
support only gives me extra motivation to start working very hard on my recovery.”
At the very least it sounds like he’s expected to miss the upcoming friendlies against Belgium and Portugal as far as how this will impact the national team. His absence comes as he was emerging as all but a total lock for making the World Cup squad with solid performances in his most recent showings for the national team and PSV.
It will be interesting to see how Mauricio Pochettino fills his spot on the roster. Joe Scally is an option, but should the team continue playing a three center back system, the versitility of players like Tim Weah and Weston McKennie give the manager plenty of options.
