It is easy to look at every season that the Mets have failed to make the playoffs after a large investment in a new player and evoke the title of the Bob Klapisch and John Harper book about the 1992 Mets’ season. The Worst Team Money Could Buy is an evocative title, and is indicative of the type of thinking that was and is still prevalent when discussing failing teams with big payrolls.
While 1992 led to a dark age in Mets’ fandom, there are hopes that 2027—if baseball is played at all—can and should
be a better year for the Mets. But in anticipation of that potential lockout, we’re going to start up a book club where, every month for the duration of the offseason, we will read a book about the Mets and/or baseball in general, and then have a chat about it.
And so, four weeks from today, on November 9, we will have a chat in our comments section about the book. It is available to borrow from Archive.org, it is available via Bookshop.org, check your local library, and there are lots of used copies out there in the wild.
If you’ve got ideas for a future selection, leave them in the comments!
